The difference between coaching, mentoring, training, consulting, and therapy

A very common question in the “coaching world” is about the boundaries between professional coaching and mentoring, training, consulting, or therapy. To help you understand better, I will try to define each of them shortly below.

Coaching – Coaching is a more complex process than training. It is individualized and involves, among other things, raising awareness about what can be improved, taking personal responsibility, setting goals and steps to achieve them, and evaluating results. Coaching is a personalized process that explores the objectives agreed upon together with the client.

Coaching is based on the belief that the client already has all the necessary resources and is able to generate their own solutions, with the partnership with the coach, who supports them through powerful questions and helping them discover new perspectives.

According to the ICF – the International Coach Federation, the largest organization in the world for certification of coach training schools and for independent certification of professional coaches, coaching is: “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” Coaching is a client-driven process.

The ICF Code of Ethics is a set of principles and standards developed by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) to guide professional coaches in their work. The ICF Code of Ethics incorporates the core values of the International Coaching Federation (ICF Core Values) as a foundation to understanding ethical principles, and ethical standards of conduct. Training – Training aims to develop new skills and knowledge in an efficient and short period of time, helping participants successfully complete their tasks. Training has a clear agenda with objectives set by the trainer and can be repeated many times.

Mentoring – Mentoring is the process of developing a person (“mentee”) with less experience, who is helped and guided by another person (“mentor”) with more experience and knowledge in a specific field.

Consulting – Consulting means providing solutions to clients based on extended expertise in a specific domain.

Therapy – Therapy is most often focused on solving emotional traumas or conflicts from the past that affect a person’s present emotional state. If psychotherapy brings about a remedial change, coaching offers a generative change – working with abilities, talents, and knowledge, with the purpose of creating something of higher quality.
