How to break the perfectionism cycle with micro-coaching moments
Perfectionism has become quite “popular” around us these days in coaching sessions, and it is a double-edged sword. It drives high achievers to deliver quality, but it can also keep them stuck, stressed, and never truly satisfied. This is the story of one great person; we can call her Maria (to not disclose the real name)—a project manager in tech, who learned to celebrate her progress, one micro-coaching moment at a time.
Maria was always the first to arrive at work and the last to leave, whether in a “remote” or “hybrid” way of working. She held herself (and sometimes her project team) to impossibly high standards. Every deadline felt like a race, every little mistake felt like a huge deal, and every kind word was almost brushed off. “If it’s not perfect, it doesn’t count,” she used to tell herself.
Yet, despite her dedication, Maria felt unhappy most of the time. Successes faded quickly, while small setbacks were seen as very big “things”. Over time, she noticed the “consequences”: stress, loss of motivation, and even tension with her colleagues.
Everything changed when a colleague introduced her to the VLARAONE AI Coaching Companion. Skeptical at first, Maria wondered if an online “thinking partner” app could really help her shift long-standing habits.
The onboarding was simple—no judgment, just curiosity. On her first day, in one conversation, the companion invited her to reflect on “one thing you did well today.” She hesitated; her instinct was to focus on what went wrong. But she said, “I stayed calm during a tough call with a client.” It felt small, but a little lighter.
Over the next two weeks, Maria made time for daily check-ins for a few minutes. The app enabled her to appreciate the small victories along the way, rather than solely focusing on perfection. Some days she celebrated completing a tough task; other days, just showing up with a positive attitude. She also started using the “Streaks” feature, aiming for three days in a row, then five, then ten. Each day she had few conversations with her online thinking partner, reflecting on the daily challenges she was facing.
Her biggest “aha” moment came in a conversation with an agent when the AI companion asked:
“If a teammate achieved what you did today, what would you say to them?”
Maria realized she was much kinder and more encouraging to others than to herself. Wow!
After a few weeks on this new daily “routine”, Maria noticed key changes:
- She ended each workday feeling more at peace and less self-critical.
- She was quicker to acknowledge both her own efforts and those of her team.
- For the first time in years, her motivation grew without the anxiety of never being “good enough.”
- Her job satisfaction climbed
Colleagues around remarked on her new calm and positive energy. Best of all, Maria began to trust that progress—even imperfect progress—was something to celebrate.
Lessons Learned: Progress Over Perfection
Maria’s journey isn’t about lowering standards but about finding joy in the process. Her advice for other ambitious professionals is simple:
“Start with one small win each day and notice how it feels.” Perfection is overrated—growth happens step by step. A digital coaching companion helped me recognize what I was already doing well.”
